Laptop Configuration

ITS is offering several Laptop Configuration sessions.

To sign up for a laptop configuration session, please be sure to drop by the Help Desk, room 342, and sign up for one of our coming sessions:

Tuesday, September 2nd, 4pm - 6pm in Room 310

Wednesday, September 3rd, 4pm - 6pm in Room 304

Monday, September 8th, 4pm - 6pm in Room 224

Sign up is first come first serve and priority will be given to those who signed up in advance.

Laptop users seeking help with configuration for the SMG network, should visit the ITS instructional page, or download the easy resource guide. If necessary, after trying both these resources, SMG students can sign up for a laptop configuration session through SMGnet. During these sessions, students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with one of our technicians getting their laptop setup for BU-SMG connectivity. The machine will then be configured for the SMG Hariri Building and you will have print queues installed to connect your machine to the printers in the SMG Computer Labs.

Note: ITS does not provide any laptop service or repair beyond connecting to the SMG network. If your laptop is experiencing hardware or software problems, call: PSCS at 617-353-7272.

Protecting You Laptop

Users should treat laptops like they would a wallet or a purse. Never leave it unattended, or inside a locker. Furthermore, laptops should be set-up to protect from viruses. Visit PCSC's Virus Software page for information about purchasing virus software or downloading free packages provided by Boston University. When you install virus protection software, not only are you protecting your own machine but also the integrity of the BU network.

Purchase Recommendations

SMG ITS has developed a list of guidelines to consider when purchasing a laptop for use in SMG courses. Please see the complete brochure for more details.

Minimum Recommendations: Intel Pentium 4, M, or Core Processor with 1 GB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive; DVD-ROM/CD-RW Drive; 10 Mbps Ethernet Port; Vista Home Premium or Business; Office 2003 Pro; Anti-Virus & Spyware Detection

Ideal Recommendations: Intel Core Processor with 2 GB RAM; 80 GB Hard Drive; 256 MB Graphics Card; DVD+-R/RW/CD-RW Drive; USB Flash Drive; 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Port; 802.11b/g Wireless Ready; Vista Ultimate; Office 2007 Ultimate; Anti-Virus & Spyware Detection
