BU E-mail Overview

All Boston University students must activate an ACS account, which recognizes valid BU users, allowing them access to e-mail, the Web, statistical and scientific software packages, programming languages, text processing software, and individual data on file with the University including grades, contact information and more.

PCSC has a number of pages devoted to using BU e-mail, which users are encouraged to view if they have questions. These pages will help users set up forwarding addresses, vacation responses, and more. Below are a few popular topics, to get you started.

Do I really need an @bu.edu address?

An ACS account offers much more than an e-mail account. If you want to dial in with a modem, set up a Web site, or use password-protected sites such as The Link, you will need a BU login name and Kerberos password. If you wish to, you can forward BU e-mail to another account.

How can I control Spam?

The Office of Information Technology has made available a program to help combat spam on the central email servers. The program is called “SpamAssassin”. Take advantage of SpamAssassin.

How do I access my e-mail through a web browswer?

Visit www.bu.edu/webmail for Web-based access to your ACS Mail. Horde, our recommended interface, has several advantages over the older SilkyMail, including filtering capabilities that integrate better with our central SpamAssassin tagging. You can import your addressbook into Horde.
